  • What types of participatory media are used by the creator? Provide specific examples and the overall effect.

As mentioned before, Hallie Batchelder uses participatory media in Extra Dirty through Instagram story prompts, YouTube comments, and cross platform sharing, which allows audiences to actively shape and spread the podcast. One major example is her use of Instagram story questions, where followers submit dating dilemmas, topics, or advice questions that later become part of podcast discussions. On YouTube, viewers participate through comments by reacting to stories and sharing similar experiences. Instagram Reels also encourage participation through likes, comments, and reposts of short, attention-grabbing clips. Overall, Extra Dirty turns audiences into active contributors rather than just consumers.

  • How does the creator strive to create a community? What does the creator say or do to bring people together in their respective spaces? Or what factors play into the lack of a community? Provide examples.

Like posts earlier have mentioned, Hallie Batchelder builds community around Extra Dirty by creating a consistent friend group podcast environment that makes viewers feel included rather than simply watching content. A major way she does this is by regularly podcasting with the same close friends, creating an ongoing and familiar group dynamic. Her friends actively react to her stories, ask questions, and encourage her to share more details, which makes the conversations feel authentic and natural.

She also builds community through audience participation on Instagram. Hallie frequently uses Instagram story question prompts where followers can submit topics or questions that later become part of the podcast discussion. This allows viewers to directly contribute to the content and feel involved in the conversation.

The podcast also creates community through relatability. Hallie openly shares stories about dating, friendships, and social experiences, which encourages viewers to connect through similar experiences in the comments. Overall, Extra Dirty creates a participatory “friend group” atmosphere where audiences feel connected to both the creators and each other.

  • What rituals are used? How do they stay the same or change between platforms? Include examples.

One key ritual in Extra Dirty is promotion, especially on Instagram. The Instagram page uses short clips from podcast episodes to highlight the most entertaining or provocative moments, especially those involving dating stories or bold personal comments. These clips are designed to grab attention quickly and encourage viewers to go watch the full episode on YouTube.

Another major ritual is consumption, which happens mainly on YouTube. This is where audiences consume full podcast episodes featuring Hallie and her best friends. Viewers engage with complete conversations, including storytelling, reactions, and ongoing discussions that unfold naturally over time. One comment even says that they wished the podcast was three hours long.

There is also strong relationship work, since the podcast is built around a consistent friend group dynamic. Viewers repeatedly return to follow ongoing conversations and feel connected to the personalities over time. Hallie also sometimes does giveaways where she invites the winners to go out with her to talk about locations that she is a member in, further allowing them to get a true “extra dirty” experience.

Hallie also contributes to advising. During a lot of her podcasts there are segments where Hallie answers questions that her viewers ask her. These questions often get posted to the Extra Dirty story section on instagram where followers are prompted to respond in a text box to ask Hallie for relationship advice and ask her what she would do in their niche experiences. On her podcast, she then answers them aloud.

  • Discuss the four types of labor (emotional, relational, visibility, aspirational). Include revenue streams and examples.

Hallie Batchelder does many different forms of work to keep Extra Dirty up and running on each platform (emotional labor, relational labor, visibility labor, and aspirational labor).
    Emotional Labor:
She discusses her own dating experiences and reacts in real-time when she has conversation while being on the podcast. While humor is used, discussing your own personal experiences requires emotional effort. She also admitted on her recent podcast episode that she is currently dealing with a lawsuit as someone from her past is trying to sue her, but she still went on to do her podcast and acted completely unbothered.
    Relational Labor:
Extra Dirty’s dynamic with Hallie Batchelder and her best friends have created a strong relational identity. Viewers feel like they are part of their “best friend” group. This relational identity is enhanced by audience engagement in the form of YouTube comments, where viewers react to specific stories or moments. In a previous post, I shared a video of Hallie and her friends in a pod. However, almost all of her podcasts involve her three main friends: Lauren, Liv, and Greydon.
    Visibility Labor:
Hallie Batchelder uses Instagram to post short videos frequently to ensure that the Extra Dirty account stays active in the Instagram Algorithm. As for what gets viewed, most popular video clips are often provocative or funny moments from the podcast that are selected for their potential to drive attention to Extra Dirty and attract new followers/audiences.
    Aspirational Labor:
The Extra Dirty podcast provides an aspirational labor but hidden. Hallie often shares about promo events and also talks about the high scale clubs that she is a member in while living in Manhattan. By doing this, she proves that she can be invited to other stand out promotional events from high list people and their brands.

  •  How does the creator signal authenticity? Polished or curated? How does authenticity build trust? What are they showing vs saying?

Hallie establishes authenticity by using an informal tone and recording a podcast in a casual, low-fi manner. On YouTube, when Hallie records with her best friends, it gives off a lot of natural, unplanned energy. A lot of what she does isn’t highly edited and her friends frequently interject, give their thoughts, and even push Hallie to elaborate on some of her dating stories/personal experiences. It gives off an atmosphere that things aren’t too scripted. Therefore, the audience feels as if they’re experiencing true and authentic content.

Additionally, Hallie opens up about many personal (and sometimes graphic) stories throughout the podcast. And even though she doesn’t use any names, she is giving the audience a clear picture of real-life moments in her own life.
Audience trusts Hallie’s content because the audience believes they are receiving real stories and real reactions from Hallie versus some sort of curation from an influencer. She is allowing her audience to see real experiences and hear real conversations. As a result, Hallie allows the audience to form connections with both her and the podcast.

  • Identify and analyze one ethical tension point.

One potential ethical conflict within Hallie Batchelder’s Extra Dirty podcast is the issue of establishing boundaries for privacy when telling a personal story based upon her own experience(s), particularly as relates to the relationship side of things and the social interactions she has had with other individuals.

Although Hallie rarely uses names, the way she tells very detailed stories about relationships and social events (she) has been involved in, there is a chance those individuals will be able to identify themselves from the amount of detail she provides. The fact that her close friends have appeared as guest stars on the show and provide additional details in their conversations with her or sometimes urge her to tell more than she initially planned to share adds an extra layer of depth and detail to the individual stories shared.

Ultimately, the conflict of interest here comes down to providing entertainment vs. providing some form of protection of one’s right to privacy. If Hallie wants to create a podcast that is unfiltered, honest and messy, then these aspects of creating such a podcast provide listeners with an entertaining product; however, at the cost of including other people into her narratives without giving them any control regarding how they are portrayed.

  • Compare how the creator uses 2 different platforms. How do platform affordances shape content? What do the platforms allow creators to do? How does the content change between platforms? If the content is the same, how is the creator not utilizing the platform affordances? Include specific examples.

Hallie Batchelder utilizes the Extra Dirty YouTube channel and Extra Dirty Instagram account differently since both platforms have their own unique affordances, or capabilities, that affect how content is created and consumed. YouTube’s primary affordance is its support for long form content, allowing Hallie to post full length podcast episodes that remain searchable and available online over time. On YouTube, Hallie structures her content around conversations with her friends, who react to her stories, ask questions, and encourage her to explain topics in greater detail. This creates a sense of authenticity and allows audiences to hear the full story without time constraints.

In contrast, Instagram focuses on short form engagement and highlighting specific moments from larger pieces of content. Rather than posting full podcast episodes, Hallie shares short clips that feature funny, emotional, provocative, or dramatic moments designed to quickly capture viewers’ attention. These clips often lack full context, encouraging viewers to watch the complete episode on YouTube for the full story. Therefore, Instagram functions as a “hook” that draws viewers in, while YouTube serves as the platform where the full conversations, commentary, and discussion take place.

  •  Creator History and Success

Hallie’s rise to fame does not appear to be due to a singular event or a viral moment. Hallie began posting on TikTok at approximately 2020. She initially posted more general trend-based lifestyle content. However, over time the main reason people followed her was because of her personality. Rather than just participate in trends she began posting more story times/Opinions/relatable dating content/life experiences. This allowed Hallie to differentiate herself from the other lifestyle creators. Although she did not become instantly popular there were certainly some videos that contributed to her overall increase in popularity and increased awareness to her account. The fact that she had increasing levels of engagement as more and more of her videos received views caused her audience to continue to grow since they felt invested in her personality and wanted to see what else would happen in her life. The fact that Hallie joined the Unwell Network in 2024 appears to have been beneficial to her career as well since it gave her access to a broader audience that had previously followed creators producing similar types of content (The Sun, 2024).
Consistency is also something that helped contribute to Hallie’s growth. Hallie posts content fairly regularly and always keeps her audience informed. This type of consistent communication causes followers to remain engaged with Hallie and continue to interact with her content.

As a lifestyle and storytelling content creator, Hallie Batchelder primarily uses TikTok, Instagram, and podcasts to produce content. Hallie’s content is based around sharing many different aspects of her life including: dating experiences, friendships, nightlife, humor, and creating an open and unfiltered environment to create her unique style of content. Her main focus is to be an “honest, crazy, fun” person to watch; this honesty and humor have created a large following for Hallie.
